Automated finite element modeling of a human mandible with dental implants

چکیده
This paper presents an automated procedure to generate a three-dimensional finite element model of an individual patient’s mandible with dental implants inserted. The reconstruction of the geometry as well as the modeling of the material properties for the different types of bone in the jaw is based on CT data. For this purpose various methods of image processing, geometric modeling and finite element analysis are combined and extended. Special emphasis is given to the automated assignment of the material properties based on the density values of the CT data, a technique that replaces the geometric modeling of the inner structures of the bone and makes it possible to run the generation process of the model in an automated way. Finally we focus on a comparison of a mandible with different material modeling strategies that shows the quality of the finite element models.

Background and Aims: Improving dental implantation conditions in order to reduce the failure is always desirable for researchers. The aim of this study was to compare two different materials of dental implants from the viewpoint of biomechanical effect after placement and loading in the mandible. Materials and Methods: A 3D model of mandible was designed in the MIMICS 10.01 software. Then,...

longevity of osseointegrated implants are intensely influenced by biomechanical factors. Control of these factors prevents mechanical complications, which include fracture of screws, components, or materials veneering the framework. In this study, the impact of length and threads pitch of dental implants on the stress distribution and maximum Von Mises stress in implant-abutment complex and ja...

متن کاملA New Interactive 3-D Numerical Model of the Human Mandible for Peri-Implant Analysis in-Vivo Compared With Cone Beam Computed Tomography 3-D Quality
Dental implants have been widely and increasingly used in the past few decades to support and retain partial and complete dental prosthesis. The fear of failure due to mechanical overloading increased the need for stress-strain analysis along bone-implant interface of the ever growing designs of dental implants. Finite element analysis (FEA) was used by many authors to evaluate stresses around ...

Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate the stress developed in the bar connecting implants and in the mandible as a result of the elastic deformation of the mandible during mouth opening when using a finite element method (FEM). Materials and methods: A three-dimensional model of an edentulous mandible was generated based on the computer tomography (CT) data of a patient. Two cylindrical im...
